Cellular and Molecular Regulation of Embryonic Skeletal Development and Morphogenesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Embryonic skeletal development is the result of programmed differentiation and morphogenesis of the embryonic mesoderm. This review summarizes recent cellular and molecular findings on the mechanisms underlying development of the cranial, axial, appendicular skeletal components. Specifically, the identities and activities of patterning and morphogenetic genes are presented, as well as the regulation and functional consequences of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions important for cell differentiation and organogenesis. Finally, this review also surveys a number of in vitro and in vivo experimental systems currently in use for the study of skeletal development.

Developmental Changes of the Notochord and its Inductive Effects on the Adjacent Embryonic Germ Layers with Regard to the Role of Glycoconjugates
Notochord is an axial structure derived of embryonic mesoderm and in addition to structural supporting role in inducing nearby germinal layers, it has a basic role in formation of organs such as vertebral column, axial vessels, neural tube and primitive gut. This organ undergoes essential changes during the development process. First, arises from the primitive node and terms notochordal process...

Differentiation is an epigenetic process which is installed by changes of transcriptional programs over successive cellular divisions. A number of studies have reported the effects of biochemical modifications of chromatin (DNA and chromatin proteins) on the regulation of transcription. Although, these studies are able to explain how transcription of a given gene is regulated (toward activation...

At about the 20-30 day of embryonic life "Somites" start to appear. In the middle of the fourth week the dorsal portion of each Somite differentiates into an epitheliallyarranged mass of cells called dermomyotome (from which the skin and muscles originate). The lateral part of the sermomyotome then proliferates to form dermatome (from ·which originates the derm and Hypoderm). The medial ...
متن کاملOverexpression of Smurf1 negatively regulates mouse embryonic lung branching morphogenesis by specifically reducing Smad1 and Smad5 proteins.
Early embryonic lung branching morphogenesis is regulated by many growth factor-mediated pathways. Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) is one of the morphogens that stimulate epithelial branching in mouse embryonic lung explant culture. To further understand the molecular mechanisms of BMP4-regulated lung development, we studied the biological role of Smad-ubiquitin regulatory factor 1 (Smurf1)...

The past decade has unraveled novel molecular mechanisms not only of skeletal remodeling, which is the process by which the skeleton is restructured throughout adult life, but also the precision by which the skeleton is put together during embryogenesis and later modeled during growth. It is now possible to delete single genes in individual cells and during specified periods of life. This has a...
